NAFA Theatre Students Explore Commedia Dell’arte With Accomplished Italian Director

Award-winning Italian director, Marco Luly lends his expertise to the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) Theatre Department in a Commedia dell’arte-style drama, “Doctor Harlequin”.

Commedia dell’arte (“Comedy of Art”) is a form of improvised theatre with comedy. Originating in medieval Italy, its use of stock characters and masks to explore its themes of power, greed and love in an age of money, make commedia accessible no matter what language it is performed in. Despite its popularity amongst actors and audiences alike, this genre of theatre is seldom seen in Singapore.

Sponsored by the Italian Cultural Institute, this performance will be presented in English by seven NAFA Theatre students, with support from external cast members. The show opens with a gala evening for invited guests on 16 December 2005, 8pm, at NAFA’s Lee Foundation Theatre, and continues with public performances from 17 - 23 December.

Synopsis
Harlequin, as often it happens to him, is found in the wrong place at the wrong time: in the Dottore's house. So, with the help of his lover, Colombina, he first plays as a cadaver for an autopsy, then disguises as a doctor who visits patients and gives incredible medicines and remedies. In the meantime, three love stories take place and Harlequin has also to deal with the orders of his master Lelio and the jealousy of his master’s old father, Pantalone. In these already troubled love stories, enters the Capitano who adds to the mess until the happy ending, as in the tradition of Comedy.
