NAFA Launches New Degree in Arts Management - Structured 5-year diploma-to-Master’s degree pathway Open For Students

Aspiring exhibition managers, concert marketers and arts administrators can look forward to a new, specialised degree course at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) this year.

The BA (Hons) Arts Management programme, the latest addition to NAFA’s stable of degree courses, is a one-year programme that emphasises professional practice and research and is designed to develop an all-rounded understanding in the disciplines of management for the creative industries.

Students who have completed their three-year diploma in Arts Management need only spend one more year to obtain a BA (Hons) Arts Management, and may continue another year for a MA in Contemporary Practice at NAFA. Candidates may alternatively pursue their MA studies part-time within a duration of two years.

This diploma-to-Master’s direct pathway also applies to the visual arts programmes at NAFA.

A number of them chose to switch careers to pursue their love for art. Tan Sen Suan, who has a PhD in Ecology, will be graduating with a Diploma in Fine Art, while Economics graduate Faith Tan is on the road to becoming a full-fledged Interior Designer. (Please see Appendix for details).

The degrees are awarded by NAFA’s partner universities in the UK, namely, the University of Huddersfield and Loughborough University. (Please refer to Appendix for the full list of degree courses.)

Apart from degree programmes in visual arts and arts management, NAFA also conducts a BA (Hons) in Music course with the University of Wales (UK). The Music programme offers a structured pathway that begins with a Music Access Course, followed by a Diploma in Music, and subsequently a one-year BA (Hons) in Music course.

These degree programmes feature comprehensive and cross-disciplinary curriculum to nurture high-quality degree graduates to serve the increasing needs of the contemporary arts scene.

Apart from their study at NAFA, degree students also participate in a host of co-curricular activities that enrich their learning. These include talks by guest artists, overseas residential study visits, exhibitions of their work, and staging public performances. The upcoming “Fever: SVA Degree Show 2005” from 1 – 5 June will showcase graduation works of the visual arts degree students, while “One Dot, Many Possibilities” exhibits more than 1,000 visual arts works by graduating diploma students.

The success of any educational programme lies with the quality of its graduates. Teresa Teo, a graduate of BA (Hons) Fine Art: Painting & Drawing, is today an internationally acclaimed Eco-artist. Danny Seow, who graduated from BA (Hons) Interior Design, is a successful entrepreneur who owns and runs the design shop, Potato Studio. BA (Hons) in Music graduate, Ancila The, continues to pursue her passion for music as a music teacher.

Enrolment to NAFA’s diploma and degree programmes is now open. Candidates who successfully enroll on these programmes are also eligible to apply for a range of scholarships and bursaries at NAFA. More information and application forms are available on NAFA‘s website : www.nafa.edu.sg.
