Under my Skin is a touring exhibition by Asialink that celebrates the artistic journey of 5 established and distinguished contemporary Australian artists - Emil Goh, David Griggs, Pat Hoffie, Megan Keating and Louise Paramor. The exhibition assembles for the first time through the 17-year Asialink Arts Residency Programme, the recent works of the artists produced and realised during their overseas residencies. Each artist reveals a deeper understanding of the world they were immersed in, where their works critique and test new cultural contexts, unravelling new, insightful and enriching perspectives. These transform what is significant to them into alternative, still personal realities through their residency experiences. The exhibition is supported by the Australian High Commission and presented by Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore following its staging in Manila in mid-2008.

These informal affairs held in the Studio Theatre (Black Box) or Main Studio will not only provide an opportunity for all involved to participate in the creative process that is dance, also it will enable the public to get to know the exciting developments in the Department of Dance and its programmes. This particular showing will feature excerpts of works-in-progress for the upcoming Third Space Series as well as solos by the Ballet repertory class. |

“In The Ashes” by Leong Jian Ha

The Third Space Series :
Contemporary Asian Explorations in Dance
4 new contemporary Asian works will be showcased in this edition of the Third Space Series. RHYMORPHS (by Sri Rama) is a contemporary presentation of the traditional Indian dance style of Kuchipudi. The central elements of this dance style - narration and rhythm are re-interpreted in this performance of 3 short pieces. Two works have been created under the artistic mentorship of Cultural Medallion recipient Lim Fei Shen. Leong Jian Hao’s In the Ashes explores the symbolism of the rose, aptly set to the soundtrack from the movie, American Beauty. In The Shaman’s Cat, Edwin Wee treads into the world of the paranormal and lastly, Madhayanam is Nijinki’s Afternoon of a Faun as seen through an Asian lens, co-choreographed by Bernd Michael Teichmann and Jamaludin Jalil.

Performed by students of NAFA’s Diploma in Dance programme, these works showcase the diversity and versatility that are at the core of its curriculum. Students can choose from Performance, Choreography and Teaching as their major. Through rigorous training in ballet and modern dance technique, creative performance and contextual studies in Asian and Western dance, NAFA develops dance artists equipped to enter the competitive dance world and make a mark with their budding talent.

Painted Things showcases a selection of oil paintings drawn from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts Collection. These images of landscape, street scene, animal and still-life, demonstrate not just the effectiveness and varying guises of this fundamental painting medium; but also how the aesthetic pleasure of painting and studying a view - for instance, the sight of flowers in the window - would possess greater permanence than one’s mere idle gaze. Apart from works by artists such as Foo Chee San, Goh Beng Kwan, Koeh Sia Yong, the exhibition also includes recently acquired pieces by Li Cai Xiang and Tan Siew Geok.
