Co-organised by Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and Goethe-Institut Singapore, real space conceptual space presents three distinctive positions in contemporary German photography. Curated by Ute Eskildsen, the pictures of ‘public space’ featured in this ifa (Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen) exhibition explore issues beyond the aesthetic merits or authenticity of a photographic image. Be it in the ‘painterly’ architectural images of Heidi Specker, the conceptual sense of ‘constructed’ spaces by Thomas Demand, or Susanne Brügger’s dissected town views, the advanced techniques and diverse possibilities of using photography are exemplified with strong emphasis on the perennial questions concerning reality and visual representation.

This exciting event features 12 exceptional pianists who will showcase all the 32 Beethoven’s piano sonatas over 10 recitals. These pianists range from the local to internationally renowned, including Rena Phua, Ng Chong Lim, Junghwa Lee, Patsy Toh, Lim Tshui Fang, Albert Tiu, Loo Bang Hean, Ernest Lim, Bobby Chen, Foo Mei Yi, Boris Kraljevic and Valentin Schiedermair. Throughout Beethoven’s life, the piano sonata was his constant companion, spanning 27 years of creativity, from Opus 2, composed in 1795, to Opus 111, written in 1822. Through these recitals, we hope to present the genius of Beethoven, his change of musical styles in form and structure from the early to his later sonatas and how he challenged the pianos in his time which led to the evolution of our present day pianos. You will embark on the epic journey of Beethoven’s life from a miserable childhood to the years of triumph, and from the tragedy of total deafness to sublime musical transfiguration.
