There are figure drawings, figural representations, landscapes, forms of heritage and diverse representations of ethnicities through figures or the environment. In true Nanyang spirit, art that reflects the heart and soul of the intrepid, the spirit of the discoverer, the traveller and the avid explorer.

‘An aging Beethoven, ill and deaf, conducting the orchestra and chorus in the premiere of his Ninth Symphony, conducting even after they had ceased to perform, after they had reached the end of the stunning new work, after the audience had already begun to applaud, until a singer turned him around so that he could “see” the thunderous cheers that were resounding throughout the hall. The fact that it passed unheard by Beethoven makes clear that he could never have heard a note of this most magnificent composition. Think about that bitter fact, and then wonder that a man so crossed by fate could still demand a choir to sing rapturously of joy.’

Beethoven’s monumental 9th Symphony is brought to life by the Orchestra, Chorus and soloists from NAFA, under the inspiring and fervent direction of Conductor Volker Hartung. This gala concert also features the Chinese Ensemble in a myriad of authentic Chinese folk tunes; including: 丝长竹青 (Sichang Zhuqing) and 茉莉花 (Jasmine Flower).

One of the ingenious cultures of South East Asia is the eclectic hybrid style of the Peranakans, which is a fusion of the mainstream cultures of East and West. In this exhibition, a group of Visual and Performing Arts students present a heritage trail of things and events, memories and nostalgia of the by-gone era. Hoping to probe into a culture with a strong tendency of adaptation of the socio-economic conditions of its time, they try to revive the public with a renewed interest in the Peranakan life - both past and present. Inside each journal is an eclectic style - one may find the fragments of memories interpreted by the designer; another saddled images with symbolic meanings; yet another may be a private reflection, rekindling the good old days. These exhibits are the result of an intensive study of a theme, a first step towards in-depth visual research and a continuing practice of perceiving physical objects by thinking with the senses and observing subjects with a studied mode of invention.

Dancers @ Work aims to provide a platform for students to perform works by visiting Artists-in-Residence, explore and let their own choreographic ideas take flight. These informal affairs held at the Studio Theatre (Black Box) or C6-38 (Main Studio) not only give students more performing opportunities, but also enable the public to get to know the exciting developments in the Department of Dance as well as its programmes. This is an occasion for all involved to participate in the creative process that is Dance. Works featured in the performance include “LOFT”, a re-staged work by our full-time lecturer Gillian Tan as well as classical solos that have been rehearsed as part of the Repertory module.
