“Nanyang Arts”, the only Chinese quarterly publication dedicated to the arts in Singapore, was first launched in May 2000. Since its inception, it has not only served as a platform for artists to exchange ideas but also bridged the gap between the arts and the community. Its rich content and insightful exploration of artistic and cultural topics or themes had contributed significantly to the development of the local art scene, as well as improved the general public’s understanding and appreciation of the arts. Unfortunately, due to resource constraints, “Nanyang Arts” was forced to suspend its publication in June 2005 - after the 20th Issue.

Now, after an absence of almost two years, the much sought-after “Nanyang Arts” is staging a comeback and the new-look magazine will hit the newsstands from 15 Apr 2007 onwards. Driven by NAFA President Mr Choo, the re-vamped issue of “Nanyang Arts” is a collaborative effort between NAFA and Fullhouse Communications Pte Ltd, an established publishing company.

At the event, the NAFA Chinese Ensemble will entertain the guests with some delightful tunes. Mr Lim Shao Bin, Vice President of the Japanese Cultural Society, Singapore, who is also a contributor to the "Nanyang Arts" Re-launch Issue, will share his views and expertise on “Japanese War Art” with those present. A magazine sale will be held after his talk and invited guests will be treated to a reception thereafter.

A sequel to the past two peranakan shows, this show is a collaborative presentation of visual arts, media, fashion and performance art. Besides the mass appeal of the prefix, the theme is not exactly about a loss of history than it is about the historical momentum that has somehow caught up with the present. Evolutionarily diverse as a concept proposes that in matters of development, we propose questions on what should be regarded as appropriate and rightful. As the creators in this show will demonstrate, we may perhaps uncover a trail of the updated peranakan spirit underlying the tapestry of Singapore Art today. |
