In commemoration of the late Pioneer artist’s unparalleled achievements and contributions to art education in Singapore, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts presents ‘Master of Tradition and Revolution: The Artist and Teacher Chen Wen Hsi’ with the Hwa Chong Institution and Hwa Chong Alumni Association. This exhibition showcases more than 80 pieces of the artist’s works, which range from his well-known ink paintings of gibbon, squirrel and crane to lesser-seen oil paintings. The selected works, gathered from various institutions and private collectors, intend to demonstrate how Dr. Chen Wen Hsi’s safeguarding of traditions ran parallel to his artistic breakthroughs that later influenced his successors and local art history.

By Dhalang Pak Midiyanto

Singa Nglaras Gamelan Ensemble
NAFA Gamelan Ensemble
on NAFA's Sekar Tunjung Gamelan Instruments

Pak Midiyanto is not only one of the world's most famous Gamelan musicians and teachers, as well as Dhalang (Javanese shadow puppeteer), but he is also internationally respected as one of the few Gamelan makers. NAFA's Sekar Tunjung Gamelan instruments come out of his hands. Pak Midiyanto teaches Gamelan in University of California, Berkeley, USA, and as guest at the international top institutions of Southeast Asian arts education.

Presently in Singapore upon the invitation by Dr.Thomas Manhart, NAFA's ethnomusicologist, and as artist-in-residence at Artyfakt, Space for Intercultural Arts, he has been teaching the performance ensembles of NAFA and NUS over the last month. The highlight of this extraordinary learning experience is the performance of a Wayang Kulit. With Javanese shadow puppets, accompanied by Gamelan music, Pak Midiyanto reenacts a folktale, partly in English, partly in Javanese, making sure that there is enough laughter between the solemn and exciting sequences.
