Western abstract painting is central to the development of 20th Century Western Art. In this course, what will be attempted is not mere description of abstract painting but developing the idea that abstraction has and can be used for various purposes such as expression of power and wealth, alienation and destruction or exploration and extension of painting’s limits to its extreme. As we embark on the 21st century, acutely aware of the vulnerability of our environment, abstraction as artistic means opens up endless possibilities.
