This course serves to provide basic knowledge in traditional Chinese ink painting. From materials to methods, it will initiate the novice into some of the traditional themes such as chrysanthemums, plum blossoms, bamboos and orchids. Basic brush strokes through marks, points and lines will be introduced through painting these traditional subject matters. Other subjects will be introduced progressively so that students will be able to handle increasingly more complex pictorial compositions.
 
Term 1 & 2 (3hr-session x 20 weeks)
Explanation and demonstration of the technique of drawing with practice on drawing composition in ‘outline’ methods and ‘spontaneous’ style on the following themes: bamboo, bamboo and rocks, pine, pine trees and rocks, palm trees, palm trees and sparrows, willow trees, wisteria plant and little fish. Various techniques of different artists will be discussed with explanation on the various types of sketching technique for depicting different subjects.
 
Term 3 & 4 (3hr-session x 20 weeks)
Introduction and appreciation of various schools and styles - xiao xie yi, xie yi and da xie yi. Understanding relationships between subjects and accompanying calligraphy through study of masterpieces.
 
Introduction to methods required to paint small animals and birds, plus suitable backgrounds to complement these subjects such as rocks and plants. Lecturer might introduce local, tropical subjects from Singapore to be used in pictorial compositions.
 
Duration
1 year (40 weeks)
 
1 session per week on any one of the following days:
Wednesday 9.30am - 12.30pm; (Conducted in English) (Jan Intake) or
Wednesday 1pm - 4pm; (Conducted in English) (July Intake) or
Wednesday 7pm - 10pm; (Conducted in Chinese) or
Friday 7pm - 10pm; (Conducted in Chinese)
 
Admission Requirements
Applicants must be 17 years old & above.
 
Fee
S$370 per term (10 weeks) (excluding GST & material cost)

The enrolment for January 2011 intake will start in November 2010, details will be announced in October 2010 .
