This course is an introduction to the basic techniques and skills in sculpture. The projects enable the students to learn hands-on skills of carving and modeling in sculpture. Various construction methods and fabrication processes like wire armature construction and mould making techniques are essential components of this course. The students will acquire basic sculptural visual language of form and space through these practices.
 
Term 1 & 2 (3hr-session x 20 weeks)
Introduction to sculpture, tools and materials. Understanding of the process of preparing clay. Making a relief sculpture. Modelling the clay relief through guided design or model. Making a plaster waste mould and casting the mould into plaster. Polishing the final work, paint and present sculpture.
 
Introduction to the anatomy of a human head. Understanding the human skull and clay modelling practice. Analysis of the form through comparative proportions, planar and line relationships. Making a plaster waste mould. Casting the sculpture in cement.
 
Introduction of sculpture of a human hand. Preparation of the wire armature for the sculpture. Massing out the basic form of the human hand. Clay modelling of the human hand. Using the hand as a theme for designing a creative sculpture. Making a multiple-piece plaster waste mould and then cast the solid resin. Polishing the final work and presenting “The Hand Sculpture”.
 
Term 3 & 4 (3hr-session x 20 weeks)
Introduction to abstract sculpture. Preparation of the plaster block. Plaster carving practice, study of form and space. Development of a 3D Wire sculpture and making a wire framework. Introduction of the sculpture of a human head. Preparation of the armature for the sculpture. Massing out the basic form of the human head. Making a realistic portrait sculpture. Modelling the human features in detail. Casting of sculpture.
 
Duration
1 year (40 weeks)
 
1 session per week on any one of the following days :
Wednesday 6.30pm - 9.30pm; or
Sunday 9am - 12pm; or
Sunday 1.30pm - 4.30pm
 
Admission Requirements
Applicants must be 17 years old & above.
 
Fee
S$370 per term (10 weeks) (excluding GST & material cost)
 
Registration
Registration begins in November and May for courses commencing in January and July, respectively.
