This course emphasizes a progressive approach in the writing of Chinese characters with the opportunity to engage with scripts, poems and verses by renowned calligraphers. It begins with basic knowledge of calligraphic tools including the Chinese brush, Chinese ink, ink stick, ink slab, and rice paper. It introduces various styles in Chinese Calligraphy, namely, Kai Shu, Xing Shu, Li Shu, Zhuan Shu, and so on. Finally, intensive practice of Chinese calligraphy will foster discipline and constant self-reflection towards a heightened appreciation of the art form and a personal creative approach.
 
Term 1 & 2 (3hr-session x 20 weeks)
Knowledge of the Chinese brush, Chinese ink, rice paper, ink stick, ink slab and their usage. How to hold the brush and the basic strokes of Chinese calligraphy :
a) Advantages and disadvantages of the three methods namely, with the wrist resting on the table, with elbow resting on the table and without any support from the wrist and elbow.
b) Practice of basic strokes, namely, dot, horizontal stroke, vertical stroke, hook, up-tilted stroke, declining stroke, pecking stroke and trailing stroke.
 
Term 3 & 4 (3hr-session x 20 weeks)
Introduction of the various styles of Chinese Calligraphy, namely, Kai Shu, Xing Shu, Li Shu, Zhuan Shu.
a) Calligraphy practice by copying the styles to understand the differences in the characteristics and the structural composition of the Chinese characters.
b) Calligraphy practice without copying the styles to cultivate the ability to recognize and analyse the structural composition of the Chinese characters in different style. Use of various effects of the Chinese ink. Relationship between the styles of Chinese calligraphy and the composition as a whole.

1 year (40 weeks)
 
1 session per week on :
Tuesday 7pm - 10pm
 
Admission Requirements
Applicants must be 17 years old & above.
 
Fee
S$370 per term (10 weeks) (excluding GST & material cost)
 
Registration
Registration begins in November and May for courses commencing in January and July, respectively.
