As part of its corporate outreach efforts to take art to a wider community, NAFA is organizing an exhibition with Rendezvous Hotel Singapore.

The artists featured in this exhibition are Liow Yeng Lin, Yeo Jian Long and Yuan Lu. Each of the artists featured embrace dissimilar mediums and styles in their ink and watercolour works. All of them graduated in 2013 from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA). The 77-year old art institution is known for its rigorous visual art, performing arts and design programmes.

A common theme runs through the 20 abstract and representational paintings - all show a response to external stimuli and are inspired by pertinent issues. The works by Liow Yeng Lin and Yeo Jian Long comment on the rapid changes inflicted by urbanization on the natural environment. Yuan Lu takes on a more personal tack and creates pieces against the norms of traditional Chinese ink painting by incorporating effects similar to graphic design in his work.

What truly matters is how each artist highlights the paradox of the work process: the artist's reaction to an external subject matter is internalized, before expressing it on canvas. Do the paintings try to convey pure energy with a flurry of brush strokes? Perhaps a juxtaposition of disparate elements draws attention to the relationship among them? Or is the creative process contemplative, as shown through sensitive hatches of linework? The audience is invited to interpret these works for themselves.
