“Tired of his mundane life, the young Kornélis fancies about Japan and is obsessed with a beautiful Japanese portrait of Princess Ming; mesmerized by his own dreams, he does not notice the love from his cousin Léna. Under the influence of a strange elixir, he imagines a rendezvous with Princess Ming. At the same time, Léna starts a plot to win the heart of Kornélis. Will she succeed?”
Like many French artists of his time, Camille Saint-Saëns was influenced by the Japonism movement. La Princesse Jaune was set to a libretto by Louis Gallet in 1872; this opéra comique was one of his most successful operatic works.
