Join us for an evening of works scored for various ensembles by Johannes Brahms, Franz Schubert, Felix Mendelssohn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Brahms’ Liebeslieder Waltzes, Op. 52 is a collection of love songs in Ländler style for voice and piano four hands. The lyrics for the Liebeslieder come from Georg Friedrich Daumer’s Polydora collection of folk songs and love poems. Der Hirt auf dem Felsen by Schubert is scored for soprano, clarinet and piano, and portrays the image of a shepherd who is longing for his lost love. This work represents the composer at his creative peak near the end of his life.
Six Duets, Op. 63 by Mendelssohn was variously composed for two sopranos and piano between 1836 and 1844. The texts Mendelssohn chose are frequently mediocre, and many of the songs here are expressions of generalised emotions. Lastly, the NAFA Wind Ensemble makes a special appearance, accompanying our vocalists in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, K.620, an opera in two acts set to a German libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder.
