Diploma in Design & Media

Interactive Media
This major provides students to the components of interactive applications and how to appropriately bring these components together in the process of interaction design. Students will learn to manage content with efficient information architecture in accordance to good interaction that serves to enhance the usability of interactive media.

Principles of Interaction Design
Principles of Interaction Design
Interaction design refers to the behaviour of an interface or system’s reaction to its users’ action. Certain theories and principles of cognitive psychology provide a foundation for interaction design. This module will cover these concepts, theories and principles of human – computer interaction and the various evaluation techniques with the emphasis on usability and affective influence. This will be conducted based on slides presentations, lectures and group discussions, to examine through various principles and evaluation techniques.

Fundamental Interactive Technology (Programming)
Fundamental Interactive Technology (Programming)
This module provides students with the technical knowledge of developing Rich-Internet Applications. Students will acquire skills to develop data-driven applications that connect to and update databases using web based programming language. Students will learn to author aesthetically pleasing front-ends to programming basic back-ends. Students will also learn to manage contents within Rich-Internet applications, such as the structural layout and the navigation generated by the users.
DM2163
Interface Design for Rich Internet Application
Interface Design for Rich Internet Application
Effective Interface design creates efficient user interaction. In order to create a Rich-Internet Application that is both usable and visually appealing, the design process of any interface must balance the functionality from a technical perspective and the appropriateness of its visual elements. This module focuses on the interface design for Rich-Internet applications. Students are encouraged to explore different styles and visual treatments for interface design without compromising its usability to the intended audience.
DM2164
History of Design & Technologies
History of Design & Technologies
This course broadens students’ knowledge of the milestones in research, development and application of design and technologies. Students will learn to recognise and analyse the evolution of interface design, and how designers in the past decades attempted to balance aesthetics and functionality. This module includes an overview on development in computing and software such as how initially websites were built, creation of animation and motion graphics, and how the early internet transformed into an integral part in design and communication today.
DM2165
Visualisation & Communication
Visualisation & Communication
Current design projects involving multimedia are complex and interwoven with layers of non-linear content and interactivities. Being able to effectively illustrate and communicate design concepts and prototype at the initial stage of development is a crucial skill which every designer should master. In this module, students will learn to articulate ideas in written form as well as verbally, to translate ideas into strong concepts which would be comparable to the industry’s standard of design proposal. Students will learn to recognise and visualise important details into strategic storyboarding and to assimilate structured contents with effective interface design.

Integrated Studio Project 2A – Interactive Media
Integrated Studio Project 2A – Interactive Media
This module requires students to complete an assigned project brief relevant to their major. Students are expected to demonstrate their skills and knowledge on their understanding gained throughout the semester. This is a development-based module which focuses on consultation, presentations, discussions and critiques of individual projects.
