Illustration Design

This major focuses on the study and practice of illustration. It gives one an opportunity to practice ones knowledge of both illustration and design in general as well as increase ones awareness of current commercial practice. The illustration design process makes one discovers that concept dictates content and content determines composition as one learns fundamental idea generation, illustration techniques, design styles and the mechanics of illustration design.

Digital Design & Layout
This module develops students’ conceptualising skills, which will also enable them to develop their visual thinking and creative problem solving skills. Studio exercises given in this module focus on strengthening students’ ability to solve real problems with unique, personal points of view, as well as building up their confidence as strong creative conceptual visual communicators.

Conceptual Illustration
This module develops students’ conceptualising skills, which will also enable them to develop their visual thinking and creative problem solving skills. Narrative Illustration
Narrative Illustration teaches students to tell a story via the means of pictures. Relating images to text and visually interpreting stories, this module is designed to increase visual imagination and develop picture-making skills, all of which focus on producing images in a sequence. Narrative Illustration may be in the form of a book, a picture book, a comic and also in the animated version

Alternative Drawing Methods for Illustration
This module requires student to explore a range of unconventional drawing methods using any possible medium and drawing techniques. It aims to encourage students to develop their own unique drawing style. This will equip students with more versatile drawing method and thus illustration technique.

Media & Techniques
This module identifies a range of artists/designers whose illustration work will further stimulate investigation into media, materials and techniques. An understanding of media & techniques supports the other modules enable students to apply, develop and adapt their art and design ideas to client-based and creative-based project briefs.

Integrated Studio Project 2A – Illustration Design
This module requires students to complete an assigned project brief relevant to their major. Students are expected to demonstrate their skills and knowledge on their understanding gained throughout the semester. This is a development-based module which focuses on consultation, presentations, discussions and critiques of individual projects.

Design in Context 1

This module introduces students the historical background and graphic styles from the pre-historic cave painting to the early nineteen century. It focuses on the ancient writing systems, invention of alphabet, illuminated manuscript and the impact of western printing technology from BC3500 to 1700AD. It creates awareness of the western typographic genesis and methodologies after Renaissance. Students will study the basic understanding of techniques and skills of typography and encourage them to relate the historical typography from a contemporary approach. They will learn to understand that type is the essence of visual communication and by extension of visual communication design.
