Established in 1984, the Department of Dance has gained recognition as a leading provider of qualified dance practitioners for Singapore's dance industry. Today, the department is set to prepare dynamic dance professioanls locally and beyond with a fresh Diploma programme articulating into a BFA degree with internationally renowned Purchase College of Arts, State University of New York (USA). Distinguished Purchase faculty Larry Clark (former Dancer, Viola Faber Dance Company); Rosanna Seravalli (former Soloist, American Ballet Theatre); Stephanie Tooman (former Dancer, Martha Graham Dance Company) and Ted Kivitt (former Principal Dancer, American Ballet Theatre) among others teach at NAFA each year.

The first of its kind, the BFA Dance degree programme affords selected NAFA Diploma in Dance graduates the opportunity to study at Purchase in the USA for a year. Li Xue Xin, the first NAFA graduate to undertake the programme, was recognized for her outstanding achievements with a BFA cum laude from Purchase in 2009.

The Department of Dance is distinctive in its contemporary East-West posture providing rigorous training in ballet and modern dance techniques as well as creative, performance and contextual studies in Asian and Western dance. Together with the opportunity to choose Performance, Choreography and Teaching as an emphasis, the department develops dance artists equipped to enter the competitive dance world and make a mark with their budding talent.
   
 
   


Among the Department of Dance alumni are significant figures in the Singapore dance scene like Lim Chin Huat (1994 graduate), Co-Artistic Director of Ecnad Project Ltd and Young Artist Award recipient, Ricky Sim (1995 graduate), Artistic Director of Ricky Sim and Dancers, Associate Director of Moving Arts and former full-time dancer with Singapore Dance Theatre; Wong Wai Yee (1992 graduate), Associate Director of Moving Arts and former full-time dancer with the Arts Fission Company; Roslina Bte Yusoff (2003 graduate), former full-time dancer with The Arts Fission Company, Wang Da (2004 graduate), 1st prize recipient of Open Modern Solo & National Character Solo in the 6th CSTD Asia-Pacific Dance Competition 2004, Yan Xiangyi (2007 graduate), full-time dancer with The Arts Fission Company, Edwin Wee (2008 graduate), full-time dancer with The Arts Fission Company; Xu Lei Ting (2009 graduate), 1st prize recipient of Classical Solo in the 10th CSTD Asia-Pacific Dance Competition 2008, to name just a few.
