Garment Construction (Certificate)* (New)

Introduction

These courses are designed for those interested in acquiring basic flat pattern making and sewing skills that are essential for garment construction. In each short course, both pattern making and sewing will be taught concurrently to enable students to construct a garment. Apart from pattern making, students will receive clear instructions and guidance on various techniques and methods of handling fabrics as well as cutting and sewing garment parts.

Garment Construction 1 - To construct a basic pencil skirt (10 sessions x 3 hours)

This course provides the essential hands-on skills to construct a made-to-measure skirt. Students will acquire the basic principles of flat pattern making from taking body measurements to drafting a variety of skirts such as a pencil skirt, A-line skirt and circular skirt. Students will also learn to sew a pencil skirt using an industrial sewing machine.

Garment Construction 2 - To construct a basic sleeveless blouse (10 sessions x 3 hours)

In this course students will learn to draft and sew a basic sleeveless blouse with a center-front button opening. Students will know how to apply appropriate garment ease to the bodice block and perform dart manipulations on the various parts of the upper torso. Students will also study the various types of necklines and their finishing methods.

Garment Construction 3 - To construct a blouse with collar and sleeves (10 sessions x 3 hours)

This course introduces students to the various types of collars and sleeves during the pattern making class. The learner will acquire the skills to attach a Hawaiian collar and basic sleeves to the bodices to make up the essential parts of a garment.

Garment Construction 4 - To construct a basic pair of pants (10 sessions x 3 hours)

This course imparts practical hands-on skills needed to construct a basic pair of pants. Students will be able to differentiate the various types of waistlines and pant styles from slim, straight to bell-bottom cut. Students will sew pockets, centre-front fly opening and waistband to the main parts of the pants.

Applicants must be 17 years old and above.

Prerequisites for Registration

  • Applicants are required to attend the short courses in sequential order
  • For Garment Construction 3 & 4, applicants need to complete Garment Construction 1 & 2 (within six months)

Applicants can sign up for the above 4 short courses at a package price of S$2200.

Subsidies

SkillsFuture Credit
All Singaporeans aged 25 and above can use their $500 SkillsFuture Credit from the government to pay for a wide range of approved skills-related courses. National Silver Academy
Applicable to Singaporean seniors aged 50 and above who will receive a subsidy of 50% off the course fee (capped at $500 per course). Please note that the subsidy will only apply to the course fee and will not cover GST.

Cheques should be crossed and made payable to the 'Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts' and delivered/sent to:
80 Bencoolen Street (S) 189655. The student's name, NRIC/Passport number and contact number must be written on the reverse side of the cheque.

Refund of Fees

Withdrawal within 14 days before the commencement date of each short course Course fee will be refunded after deduction of S$107 as administrative charges.
Withdrawal on or after commencement date
No refunds will be given.

Cancellation/ Postponement

  • NAFA reserves the right to cancel or postpone any course without prior notice.
    In the event that the class is unable to proceed due to unforeseen circumstances, NAFA will process a full refund of the course fees.

Withdrawal/ Deferment/ Transfer

  • Withdrawal or deferment requests should be made in writing with supporting relevant documents (if any) to Continuing Education. Request for deferment is subject to approval.
  • No deferment is allowed after the 2nd lesson of each short course.
  • No transfer of course upon registration.

Replacement of Classes

  • There is strictly no replacement lesson should the participant absent himself/herself from the course.

Part Time Certificate courses (January 2018 Intake) will be commencing on the week of 2 January 2018.

The enrolment for January 2018 intake has ended.

The next intake will commence in July 2018, and enrolment will be in May 2018.
