Introduction

The Central Conservatory of Music (CCOM) is situated in the capital of China, Beijing. Established in 1949, it is an institution dedicated to nurturing world-class professionals in music. In 1990, NAFA signed the official contract to host the Chinese Instruments Graded Exams in partnership with CCOM. The first Graded Exams were held in 1991, and continued on an annual basis in November. The NAFA-CCOM Graded Exams place strong emphasis on methodical music pedagogy and solid foundational musical skills. The Examination Committee strives to maintain the highest examination standards and offer candidates with valuable suggestions and performance advice for further musical development.

  • Examinable Instruments
    With effect from 2017, NAFA Chinese Instrument Graded Examination will comprise 10 main instruments, namely Erhu, Pipa, Guzheng, Dizi, Yangqin, Suona, Ruan, Sheng, Liuqin, Percussion.

  • Exam Grades
    The Graded Examination consists of Grades 1 to 9 and Diploma * (a total of 10 grades).

    *Percussion does not provide exam at Diploma Grade.

    Diploma Grade
    Candidates registering for the Diploma examination are required to attach a photocopy of their Grade 9 certificate jointly issued by NAFA and CCOM for verification. Candidates who have successfully attained a PASS or better results for the Diploma Grade will be qualified to teach his/her Chinese Instrument.

    Candidates who attained a DISTINCTION for the Diploma Grade may be considered for exemption from the music audition when applying for admission to the Diploma in Music course (major in Chinese instruments) under the NAFA School of Music.

  • Exam Requirements
    The exam requires candidates to perform 3 music pieces below from memory* for Grades 1 to Diploma level. There will be NO aural or sight-reading tests.

    1) 1 Technical Study Music Piece
    2) 2 Solo Music Pieces

    Note: All pieces are to be chosen from the official CCOM Examination Syllabus (Overseas Version). Click here for information.

    *Candidates below the age of 18 are required to perform pieces from memory for 1 technical study piece and 2 solo pieces.

    Candidates aged 18 and above can choose to perform the above repertoire with or without scores during the examination.

  • Payment Method
    Please click here for a table of examination fees for the 2017 Chinese Instrument Graded Examination.
    For Individual candidates - Payment accepted online or in-person at NAFA Finance Counter (NAFA Campus 1, Wing A, Level 1).
    For Group candidates - Payment is accepted by cheque/NETS/VISA only for group applications at NAFA Campus 1, Level 1, and Finance Counter. Bring along student name list to make payment.
  • Admission Slip (by post)
    An Admission Slip stating the date, time, location and examination venue will be mailed out to the candidate by end October 2017.
    Requests on changes to the examination dates and arrangements are to be submitted by EMAIL ONLY to nafai@nafa.edu.sg latest by 13 November 2017.
  • Withdrawal Policy
    Once registered, candidates who request to withdraw from the graded examination are to send an EMAIL to nafai@nafa.edu.sg, indicating Name of Candidate, Instrument and Grade, Reason for Absenteeism, and supporting documents (such as Medical Certificate issued by General Practitioner).

    Upon validating the withdrawal reasons and supporting documents, a refund of up to 50% of the examination fee will be made by cheque to the candidate. All withdrawal requests are to be submitted in writing by 13 November 2017. Candidates who submit the withdrawal requests after 13 November 2017 will not be eligible for refund of the exam fees.

  • Instruments
    NAFA will provide instruments to candidates taking the Guzheng and Yangqin examinations. Candidates are advised to check the tuning of the instrument before playing, or request for the tuning service from the student helpers on standby.

    Instruments provided by NAFA include:

    Holding Room
    1 set standard 21-stringed Guzheng (with stands) in D major
    1 set Yangqin (with stands)

    Examination Room
    2 sets standard 21-stringed Guzheng (with stands) in D major and G major
    1 set Yangqin (with stands)

    *Candidates are advised to bring their own instruments which they are familiar with for the examination.

  • Examination Date Requests
    Please indicate in your online application on the required dates, including a valid reason. Please email supporting documents to nafai@nafa.edu.sg for us to facilitate your request. All dates are subject to visiting examiners’ schedules.

  • Request to print Instructor’s Name on certificate
    Please indicate clearly on the registration form if you wish to print your instructor’s name OR school’s name on the certificate. There will be no changes to the certificate after collection.

Please note that there will be no disclosure of examination results by phone or by email, candidates are to collect their results slip and certificate in person.

Candidates are advised to check their particulars carefully before collecting the certificate.

There will be no changes to the certificate information once collected.

  • Self-Registered/Teacher-Registered
    Candidates who have registered under their teacher’s charge can collect their own certificate with an agreement from their teacher.

    Candidates who are unable to make a trip in-person to NAFA, may write a letter of authorization for another person whom they may wish to entrust the certificate to, together with a photocopy of the candidate’s identification document (i.e. IC/Student Pass).

  • Missed Collection Date
    Candidates who are unable to self-collect on the above dates may make an appointment at 6512 2240 or email at nafai@nafa.edu.sg for alternative certificate collection dates. There will be no mailing of the certificates by post.

  • Review of Results/Re-examination
    There will be NO review of results and NO re-examination. The examiners’ decision is final.
