Biography

Through photography, Erica Lai reviews places that are deemed safe and secure. In these situations, individuals are compelled to be territorial either as a measure for safeguarding and/or restriction. She is interested in the consequences of abstracting one’s historical and geographical bearings through the medium, in an attempt to bring out universal truths.

Lai has exhibited her photographic works in Singapore, Hong Kong, and the US. In 2005, she was awarded first prize for Photography in the UOB Painting of the Year competition, and the Judge's Choice Award in the inaugural Singapore Art Show. Her work has also been written about in both national and foreign media, and commissioned by the Economist Magazine and design/music labels in Tokyo, Japan.

In 2010, she was the recipient of an artist residency at the prestigious Banff Centre in Calgary, Canada.  Her latest body of work - Old Man and the Sea, was an educational community project, and was presented as part of the Singapore Biennale in 2013.  She will be showing her works next at Pearl Lam Gallery Hong Kong in July 2014.
