The Department of Music at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts will kick off the year-long anniversary celebrations with a rousing repertoire of Chinese and Western music that reflects the musical vocabularies taught at the academy. The NAFA Chinese Orchestra, directed by Quek Ling Kiong, will give the world premiere of “Blossoms”(爭艳), a work specially commissioned for NAFA's 75th Anniversary by prominent composer Phoon Yew Tien (former Head of Department and Cultural Medallion recipient). The programme also includes "Pearls", composed by Senior Teaching Fellow Eric Watson.

The evening will end on a high note with the NAFA Orchestra and Chorus led by maestro Lim Yau in one of the best-known works of Western classical repertoire, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. This glorious work climaxes in the famous "Ode to Joy" and its message of universal friendship and brotherhood. Joining them are vocal soloists from NAFA's degree partner, the Royal College of Music, London - Janis Kelly, Justin Lavender and Roderick Earle, and NAFA's Head of Vocal Studies, Jessica Chen.

A combined exhibition by the 3D Design + Design and Media Departments, it is a feast for the senses where the audience is led on a guided tour and taken on a narrative journey through mixed 2D and 3D media.

At the core of the exhibition’s storyline is Nature. The exhibition set is divided into three main parts: a small theatre that screens an introductory video to set the tone of the journey, and two pavilions which showcase a portfolio of work by 10 award-winning alumni.

Audiences will experience the simple beauty of Nature, and their journey through the exhibition is an attempt to reconcile them with the basic elements of the natural environment that leads to a utopia. Through the issued tablets with Augmented Reality capabilities, display panels or posters will transform into a visual spectacle. The experience enhances one’s perception of reality, and also underscores how technology complements creativity.

Stories of people, who are misunderstood, controlled and restrained, have emerged in different countries and across the centuries. Franz Kafka, living in Prague in the early twentieth century, was such a person and expressed his plight as an extended metaphor in his absurd novel, Metamorphosis. In this story, Gregor Samsa, lives with his parents and sister in a small apartment. He is a salesman and the sole breadwinner. Misunderstood by his family who are frustrated with his search for purpose and self-worth, he transforms into an ugly insect...

This story resonates with many people, who recognise the isolation experienced by a creative spirit living within a family that neither understands nor tolerates his nature. It is a testament to Kafka’s great writing, that we, in Singapore today, find enlightenment in this tale.

Directed by Matt Grey, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Theatre at NAFA, the performance will feature English Drama students from the Department.

An exciting triple-bill of dance showcasing the choreographic talents of Singapore Young Artist Award (1993) winner and artistic director of Era Dance Theatre, Osman Abdul Hamid, Singapore Young Artist Award (2000) winner, Jeffrey Tan and James Cousins, winner of Matthew Bourne’s inaugural New Adventures Choreographer Award (2011).

SWIRLING - Jeffrey Tan
SWIRLING is Jeffrey Tan’s new choreographic work specially commissioned for the Department of Dance’s celebration of NAFA’s 75th Anniversary. The piece twists and distorts classical ballet lines to challenge norms and forms. This seemingly dystopian disregard is simply Jeffrey’s extreme exploration of pushing the boundaries of beauty. The work bears all the hallmarks of Jeffrey’s formidable fluidity in the myriad liquid lifts and lines.

ARUS MASA (Tides of Time) - Osman Abdul Hamid
Young Artist Award recipient and artistic director of Era Dance Theatre, Osman Abdul Hamid, will re-create a contemporary Malay work for NAFA’s 75th Anniversary celebrations.

Change constantly occurs without any efforts on our part to keep changing. Nonetheless, though change is constant, it will cease into nothing without the essence of self. We may have our views and opinions but ultimately we are bounded by both explicit and implicit rules. And there are times whereby we need others to assist and support us.

EVERYTHING AND NOTHING (Excerpt) - James Cousins
Everything and Nothing is an ambitious award winning work that made James Cousins the winner of the first New Adventures Choreographer Award (NACA), set up by dancer and choreographer Matthew Bourne. Created in collaboration with lighting designer Lee Curran, set designer Collin Falconer and costume designer Bettina John; the dancers weave seamlessly in and out of a constantly evolving space combining James’ signature complex ensemble sequences with daring duets and emotive solos. Through the magnifying glass of the quantum world, this breathtaking piece is performed to a driving original score fusing electronic and classical sound worlds by composer Seymour Milton.

* This work was originally produced by Re:Bourne for the New Adventures Choreographer Award, and supported by Arts Council England, DanceEast and The Place.
