Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) is proud to present the second edition of Singapore Saxophone Symposium after its successful premiere last year. The Symposium will be held from 27 to 29 July, Friday to Sunday at Lee Foundation Theatre, NAFA Campus 3. Top musicians such as Vince Gnojek, Yasuto Tanaka, Dan Gelok, Low Chee Meng, ensembles such as 4Unlike, Quatuor De Saxophone Diapason, Amigo Saxophone Quartet and local saxophonists will gather for a music extravaganza featuring the saxophone.
Probably one of the most versatile of musical instruments, the music of the saxophone has often been described as haunting, sexy, soulful, naughty, charming, melodious, rich and colourful. Despite its relative youth, the instrument is the most versatile of woodwind instruments and it has made huge inroads into different genres of music, from classical to jazz, modern and avant garde. The Singapore Saxophone Symposium will showcase the beauty of the instrument and demonstrate its various facets when played in the hands of different musicians. It is a platform for students to learn from the professionals as well as for saxophone fans to enjoy a festival of saxophone music.
The Symposium will kick off on Friday, 27 July evening with a recital by Vince Gnojek from USA. Gnojek has played all over the world with orchestras, wind ensembles and jazz ensembles. He was also a member of the Denver Symphony Orchestra, the Colorado Music Festival Orchestra, the Denver Chamber Orchestra, the Kansas City Symphony Orchestra, and the Topeka Symphony Orchestra. In addition to his first solo recording, CROSSINGS, he has recorded with the University of Kansas Wind Ensemble on John Mackey’s Concerto, the Harvey Pittel Saxophone Quartet, Kansas Woodwinds, and the Kansas City Boulevard Big Band.
A concert by 4Unlike will showcase the versatility and compatibility of the saxophone with other instruments as it partners the French Horn, Flute and its most unlikely companion, the Chinese Sheng. Hailing from Hong Kong, four young professional musicians who received musical training from Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Royal Northern College of Music, Folkwang Hochschule Essen and Conversatoire de Cergy-Pontoise respectively aim to promote contemporary music and explore the vast possibilities of stage performance through their unique sound and unusual collaboration.
In addition to a series of recitals, there will be a series of events exclusive to Symposium delegates, including a masterclass and a panel discussion to provide in-depth understanding of the saxophone. A play-off session featuring four local saxophonists will also provide a lively afternoon programme. The masterclass with renowned recording musician Yasuto Tanaka is not to be missed by fans and students. Tanaka has received a series of accolades including admiration from great French saxophone virtuoso, Marcel Mule. His first recording appeared in 1991, the highly successful Saxophone - Solo Masterpieces for Wind Instruments and Percussion which was followed by Rhapsody in 1995 and Saxophobia in 1997. Saxophobia draws on an all-inclusive attitude, blending Gershwin's "classical" works with his classical "popular" songs. On top of his heavy performance schedule, Tanaka also teaches at Showa Music College and Showa Junior College.
The Symposium will conclude with a panel discussion on ‘The Modern Saxophone: Repertoires and Techniques’ followed by a Closing Gala Concert that features Low Chee Meng, the Amigo Saxophone Quartet, Yasuto Tanaka and the Philharmonic Winds.
