Implanted 2012 features artwork by 10 second-year students from the Department of Fine Art at NAFA and 10 secondary two students from C.H.I.J Secondary (Toa Payoh). The exhibition is the result of a series of workshops that artist collective, Artist Parallel held for the secondary school students from January to April. The younger students were given the concept of the exhibition and taught various art forms by the seniors before they created their artwork under mentorship.

A first of its kind collaboration, this project not only allowed Artist Parallel to gain experience in putting together an exhibition but also allows them to interact with and share their knowledge with the young students, giving them a feel of what it is like to take art studies at a tertiary level and being an aspiring artist. Exposing the teenagers to the different mediums and genres of art also gives them the opportunity to expand their horizons and deepen their understanding of the art making process. It would not only help them build up knowledge of the art world, but also nurture teamwork, appreciation for art and opinions of others. The satisfaction of seeing the fruits of their labour being exhibited to the general public is also a powerful motivation towards encouraging them to pursue the arts in future.

Singapore is looking to expand and develop the local arts scene and as such, activities such as this collaboration will be a good opportunity to expose the younger generation to the art making process and as well as for current art students to hone their craft and prepare them for their future. The artists also aim to make art more accessible to a greater audience such as young students who may not be taking art as a subject. Artist Parallel hopes that this collaboration will be the first in a series of similar collaborations and outreach programmes to other schools and students, as well as inspire other art students to develop similar collaborative programmes to reach out to younger students.

Editor’s note:

Established in 2010, Artist Parallel is an artist collective consisting of 10 students currently pursuing their Diploma in Fine Art at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA). The group is a multi-disciplinary mix of painters (5), sculptors (2), printmakers (1), and photographers (2). The eclectic mix of aesthetics and disciplines within the group allows for exploration into cross-disciplinary art in addition to their own fields of specialty. This diverse background also presents different perspectives which provide a wide range of ideas and facilitate active and thought-provoking discussions.

The collective believes that art making is about interaction and communication and therefore, Artist Parallel is also about reaching beyond the confines of NAFA to a younger generation. For Artist Parallel’s inaugural exhibition, they have chosen to work with one of the founding members’ alma mater: C.H.I.J Secondary (Toa Payoh).
