This three-year full-time course is a purely performance-based programme. The core of this vocational training curriculum is actor-training with four fundamental components of Acting, Body & Movement, Voice & Speech and Singing, progressively structured within the total of six semesters. Students may choose to specialise in either Mandarin Drama or English Drama acting.

In addition to these acting-related modules, students will undertake a core module series of Production that spans the areas of Stage & Production Management, Lighting, Performance Design, Sound Design as well as Theatre Makeup and Hairstyling & Theatre Wigs.

The curriculum also consists of the supporting and elective module series in the areas of playmaking, dramaturgy and production, introduction to screen productions as well as theatre education in school, etc.

This focused training programme with diversified module specialisations provides myriad opportunities for students to develop a broader range of solid theatre-making skills. As young theatre-makers of the 21st Century, students need to adapt yourself to a variety of performance environments and this course is tailored to suit the growing demands of this exciting and dynamic trend.

More importantly, this course draws upon the unique location and history of Singapore and its rich traditions of cultural diversity. Students will get the opportunity to study theatre that is influenced by Asian, Southeast Asian and Western theatrical styles as well as gain an appreciation of their own individual cultural heritages that they can bring to the programme.

Students can choose to develop their specialisations on the areas of their interests and strengths from Semester 2 onwards.

Options include:

Stage & Production Management
Learn the hands-on craft of what it takes to run a theatre/performance event from both front-of-house and back-stage perspectives and areas.

Screen Production
Study the ins-and-outs of a screen production from both the technical aspects (camera handling, shooting and editing techniques) and aesthetics (conceptualisation, scripting, etc.) of screen productions.

Stage Directing
Benefited from students' solid actor-training, students will experience the rigorous process of stage directing, working professionally with actors and designers with insightful understanding and experience of playmaking within the structured on-campus performance/production mechanism.

Playwriting and Dramaturgical Work
Learn the history and development of the art and crafts of dramatic writing, as well as the process and techniques of scripting and devising, dramaturgical conceptualisation and adaptation of plays.

Southeast Asian Theatre Studies
Through the modules of Introduction to Southeast Asian Theatre, Physical Theatre and Malay Drama series, students can further engage themselves in this unique area of training, study and practice.

Acting for Camera
Based on the profound training in stage acting, students will find it beneficial and advantageous for them to adapt and develop their stage acting techniques to the aesthetics and crafts of screen acting. This will prepare students for the more challenging career perspective as TV and film actors/actresses upon graduation.

NAFA theatre diploma holders with the final-year core module of Performance & Theatre Skills scoring B (and above), can apply for this one-year programme. This top-up degree programme represents an intensive production year for students of Acting and Production majors, bridging them directly to the industry.

This bachelor's degree is validated and awarded by the University of Essex, UK with its East-15 Acting School - our partner institution and the top drama school in the UK. This programme is entirely delivered at the NAFA Department of Theatre, Singapore by a dedicated ensemble of local and international maestros.

Commencement of study requires a minimum number of students that will be determined by NAFA and partner university.
