Department of Music
Over 200 diploma and degree students are supported by the distinguished international faculty of the Department of Music. All music graduates and experts in their own fields, they aim to nurture students into an individual who is highly skilled, musically adaptable and equipped to enter professional life as a creative and flexible 21st century musician.

In addition to weekly public performances on campus at the Lee Foundation Theatre, NAFA student soloists, ensembles and orchestra can be heard regularly in performance throughout Singapore.

Frequent visits are made by leading international artists who offer master classes, workshops, lectures and specialist support. Our strong links with professional arts organisations within Singapore and links with renowned music conservatoires overseas, in particular Royal College of Music, London and Central Conservatory of Music, Beijing, enable us to maintain high international music standards.

We develop courses that are attuned to students' aspirations - perhaps to work in the developing music industry, either as performers or teachers, or to pursue further study at a higher level. These courses also make for attractive options for regional and international music students to study and perform within a multi-cultural environment. Graduates of the course can also be expected to enter and influence the music profession and related industries within Singapore and beyond.

Diploma in Music Performance

This full-time course is centred on the principal study instrument for which students will receive weekly lessons. Faculty-based activities include duo, chamber, ensemble and orchestral training, all of which provide performance opportunities for the student. Singers take Italian, German and French language classes, and students focusing on composing will have classes in music technology and improvisation.

Core units in historical studies (with specialised pathways for Western or Chinese instruments), practical musicianship/stylistic studies, aural and professional skills such as Instrumental or Vocal Teaching, provide support and depth to the study. These specific studies also help students develop key skills in areas including communication, informational technology, collaborative work, problem solving and study skills, with the aim to enhance employability.

For all music courses, students will select one of the following as their Principal Study:
• Composition
• Piano, Organ
• Voice
• Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Saxophone
• Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba
• Orchestral Percussion
• Violin, Viola, Violoncello, Double Bass, Harp, Classical Guitar
• Erhu, Yangqin, Pipa, Zhongruan, Suona, Guzheng
