The diplomas offered in the Department of Design & Media allow you to explore traditional design methods and combine them with new media learning. Here, you will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to meet the demands of a challenging industry.

Learn the art of generating ideas, and the research and strategy methods behind advertising today. From typography and design to interactive media, you are trained to keep up with the latest communication channels in both print and interactive platforms, and how to best deliver persuasive messages. We build your understanding of how visual language effectively communicates the information you handle.

Apart from the essential design skills, you will hone your critical thinking and generate creative solutions that go beyond the aesthetic.

Moving from two-dimensional print, you may be able to express your ideas by integrating animation and illustration. You may also look forward to working on projects ranging from the commercial to the avant-garde as we train you in directing, producing, cinematography, sound and digital visual effects.

This curriculum emphasises the development of conceptual skills, coupled with sensitivity in art direction and effective copywriting to produce work for the integrated mass media. Students will be taught to research and strategise creative and innovative solutions to customise purposeful and effective communications for a variety of products, services, brands, and media platforms. Students will also learn to appreciate and tap on new media to reach targeted audience.

Diploma in Design and Media (Animation)

This curriculum provides students with the necessary tools to animate their artistic vision into virtual reality. Students will begin to learn and acquire conceptual and development skills, and basic animation principles. These will be further enhanced with practical skills on industry norm software packages to enable students to transform their ideas into 2D & 3D animation. Students will also learn the fundamentals of storytelling, video and sound design and editing, and character design and be exposed to animation production workflow.

This curriculum engages students with the practice of rudimentary of line, colour and form, and in a range of media through building on image development, rendering and ideation skills. Students will apply all stages of design process, from initial sketches to presentation, and encouraged to develop their personal illustration style. Illustration projects of different genres will also be introduced for students to hone their interpretive skills in both traditional and digital platforms, and to develop their multidisciplinary problem-solving skills in social and cultural contexts. A host of complementary yet essential skills in design and layout, editorial publishing, and design and marketing will also be developed.

This curriculum introduces students to the principles, techniques, tools and processes for designing interactions and objects, and understanding their impact and importance in the world of digital media. Students will undertake projects that seek to investigate the creative, expressive and aesthetic forms and content of new media and media systems, including the preproduction, production and postproduction phases of work.

This curriculum stresses the practical, conceptual and theoretical aspects of video production. Students will be trained in areas such as directing and working with actors, creative storytelling, producing skills, camera and lighting techniques, as well as the various aspects of post-production. While preparing students with foundational concepts, students will be given the opportunity to actively produce a wide variety of video productions, enhancing their skills in a practical experience. As part of their graduation portfolio, students will work on an individual film that showcases their newly-developed conceptual and practical skills in bringing ideas to life.
