Diploma in Dance
Established in 1984, the Department of Dance has gained recognition as a leading provider of qualified dance practitioners for Singapore's dance industry.
The Department is distinctive in its contemporary East-West posture, focusing on Western and Asian dance techniques, creative and contextual studies that include intercultural and multidisciplinary collaborative opportunities. In addition, the Department reinforces its education framework with rigorous practical technique training in Ballet and Modern Dance. Regular artist-in-residencies by degree partner Purchase College, USA as well as frequent local and international guest artists also provide students remarkable opportunities to participate in global dance trends.
Today, the Dance Department are set to prepare dynamic dance professionals locally and beyond with a fresh Diploma programme leading to a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree with the internationally renowned Purchase College of Arts, State University of New York (USA). This first-of-its-kind BFA Dance degree programme affords selected NAFA Diploma in Dance graduates the opportunity to study at Purchase College in the USA for a year.
The Diploma in Dance is a comprehensive 3-year course that comprises 120 credits. Students who choose to embark on this 3-year comprehensive programme are eligible to apply to undertake the final year of the BFA in Dance course at Purchase College, State University of New York, USA.
In this course, students have the option to select Choreography, Performance (Ballet/Non-Ballet), or Teaching as an area of emphasis instead of the complete programme. Students will then undertake the core curriculum enhanced with a series of compulsory modules specific to the programme or their chosen area of emphasis.
Performance (Ballet)
Compulsory modules include Specialised Ballet Techniques 1A/B, 2A/B, 3A/B; Asian Dance Technique A, B C, D; Pilates A & B; Dance Repertory A, B, C, D, E.
Performance (Non-Ballet)
Compulsory modules include Asian Dance Techniques A, B, C, D;
Pilates A & B; Dance Repertory A, B, C, D, E.
Choreography
Compulsory modules include Dance Composition A, B, C, D; Music in Dance C & D; Asian Dance Workshop A, B, C, D; Dance Production C.
Teaching
Compulsory modules include Dance Teaching Methods A, B, C, D; Music in Dance C.
